Sledding 101 in Dedham

(This is a post from last year. It's that time of year again!)

It's full on sledding season here and where to go is always a question for new families in town. I would love to learn where others go, as we currently have 3 sledding sites in our repetoire, and 2 of them are outside of Dedham(yes, I leave sometimes...).

I mentioned in an earlier post that Endicott Estate is a popular site, but not great for older kids. It's perfect for the novice sledder. My 1st grader likes it too, but prefers the bigger hills.
Just over the border, on East St in fact, into Westwood there is the Norfolk Golf Club.  They have a few great hills, but it's a little more difficult, though doable for my 3 year old.  This is the hill I grew up sledding on and can remember doing so well into middle school.

The other option is Millennium Park in West Roxbury right off the VFW Parkway where you would turn left for the Home Depot.  Millenium Park is also great for a short hike and they have a great playground.

Where am I missing?

(If you want to ski with little ones, Blue Hills in Canton (on the Milton line, just a few exits from Dedham) is a GREAT place. We first starting skiing there when my oldest was 4 and I've seen even younger skiers there!)

  1. There is the hill at the Capan School off Sprague St, although a little steep

  2. Montley Hill at the Arboretum in Roslindale is by far the best hill around. You can feel better about it, though, as it has a Dedham connection. The Montley family once owned a huge estate in Dedham, and they called it Riverdale. What's left of it today can be found at Nobles.

DCH has a nice little hill on the soccer field. Also, George Wright golf course in Hyde Park has some great hills for all ages if you don't mind hiking through the snow a bit.

  5. When I was a kid, we used to go sledding at George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park - off of West St. Haven't been there in years but as I remember there was an area where we ice skated as well...great times!
